My morning routine is always the same. Look in the mirror, pluck some stray eyebrows, put on too much mascara, wash my face, put it back on, and yet again wash my face. I have trouble deciding what looks good and what looks trashy. I usually end up taking about an hour to just put my makeup on. I have to admit I am very vain about what I look like. I believe I have every right to be. In today’s society, especially in the city of Chicago, looks are everything. If you are not put together perfectly you are looked down upon. If one stray hair is out of place it could ruin your career. I am striving to be the perfect Chicago woman, especially now that I have my hair restoration completed. Suggestion to all women, research your stylist before you let them touch your hair. What a tragedy! What I thought was the best stylist in Chicago turned out to be my worst nightmare. He colored, highlighted and permed my hair all in one visit. I needed the best of the best, and as a true Chicagoan I could not wait to have it all. I wanted to be the brightest blonde in the city with the best low lights possible. I wanted the curly voluminous hair that so many women in the city have. I walked into my Gold Coast high-rise apartment and looked into my bathroom mirror. I loved what I saw. I was beautiful. Then I ran my fingers through my now blonde curly locks only to find them in my hand after I removed it from my scalp. All of my hair fell out. Never again will I get any type of dye job or perm.

LASIK eye surgery has turned out to be the most viable option for those who want a permanent solution to their eye related problem. There are many people who hate to wear glasses or contact lenses. The only possible escape from the discomfort of lenses and glasses is LASIK eye surgery. However before one opts to go for it, it is very necessary to understand what is LASIK? LASIK is the abbreviation for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis. LASIK is the most innovative and most advanced form of eye surgery. As its name suggests LASIK operation is done with the help of excimer laser to correct aberrations in vision. First a corneal flap is made on the eye by a mechanized and programmed microkeratome. Then the excimer laser is put in to use ablate the affected part of the cornea. Unlike the previously used forms of eye surgery, LASIK is very effective on even the high level of myopia, hyperopic and astigmatism. Another big advantage of LASIK is that the eye takes minimum time to heal. In comparison to the other forms of surgery, LASIK enables the patient to regain normal eye sight faster. LASIK surgery is also virtually painless and the discomforts are comparatively less than the other kinds of surgeries.

I had dinner last week with two of my good friends from high school who recently got married. It is really funny to see the two of them together now that they are married. I do no really think that they act any differently than they did before they got married, but it just seems different. It was really odd for me to listen to talk about where they were going to live and their various home options. They are really going the whole nine yards with the whole thing. They have a realtor helping them find a place and everything. It was even stranger for me to hear them talk about how many bedrooms they were looking for, because it might be the home that they raise a family in. We always said they were married, even back in high school when they started dating, but to hear them talk about having kids really caught me off guard. Dinner was nice and I got a chance to catch them up on everything I had been up to lately. It seemed funny to me to tell them about the job I was just starting, as they were telling me about life as a married couple.

Here I found a couple of options. The one I chose seemed a little pricey, but I went with it anyway.

Rather than being a matter of how well everyone gets along, it has more to do with my neighborhood being in a constant state of flux than anything else. Gentrification has torn down not just a bunch of old, dilapidated buildings but a certain loss of community has gone down with it. I suppose it’s difficult for people to come together as a community when the community is always changing but it’s even harder when what is built in its place is just a bank.

Just this summer for example, across from my apartment building the abandoned warehouse that housed an assortment of bums and what one friend describes as “cart people” was torn down and an Xsport Fitness was erected on the land. I once had a nice view of the skyline but now I get to stare at the brick wall of a parking structure that is a mere forty feet from my living room window.

In addition to the new eyesore on my block, my neighborhood is filled with shopping plazas, overflowing parking lots and new condominiums. In just a two block radius, all of my needs can be conveniently met when I decide to visit Target, CVS Pharmacy, the currency exchange, the Laundromat, grocery store, bowling alley, movie theater, Starbucks, or of course, the local Italian beef joint.

But if you walk down a few blocks in the other direction, you will find that the other half of my neighborhood consists of 35 acres of three- and four-story apartment building projects and two-story row housing.

Many of the young kids, kids who have probably been living in this neighborhood their whole lives, often graffiti or tag the new buildings going up during construction. People think it’s sad that the youth of today can’t respect the developers who are improving the neighborhood. But I have a sneaking suspicion that the kids do it because they don’t necessarily want someone coming in and improving the neighborhood, especially when that improvement has been written off and delayed for the entire length of their short lifespan. The lower income families that have probably lived here for two or more decades may not be able to afford the higher property values and higher taxes that come along with neighborhood improvement. So sometimes I really wonder whose side I should be on. The guy with the bulldozer or the kid with the spray paint can?

I can’t blame anyone for being adverse to improvement because even though I’ve walked these streets for more than a decade, I can’t seem to remember what used to be in the building before that coffee shop was there or which storefront the bookstore occupied before it moved across the street. In my local neighborhood where construction is swift and the changes are rapid, I’m glad I probably still have a year or two left before someone buys out my apartment building from my landlord and I have to move.
